    1866 Shield Nickel, First Year Issue of this Coin (Rays Between Stars) Very Good.
    Mintage of this first year edition was around 14.7 million, and the rays were dropped from the design the following year in 1867, so a total of only 16.7 million were ever produced.  The composition of this coin is 0.750 copper and 0.250 nickel, with a total weight of five grams.  All of these coins carry no mint mark as production was exclusively limited to the Philadelphia mint.
