    Rays (1866-1867)
    – The Rays Shield Nickel was designed by James Longacre using the obverse shield motif previously used on the two cent copper pieces. The reverse has a large “5” at the center encircled with stars. The periphery has the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICAN above and the word CENTS at the bottom. The first two years had stylized “rays” between the stars on the reverse, which were removed in 1867. The Rays Shield Nickel is a popular varietal for both type collectors and nickel enthusiasts alike.
