    Description

1867 With Rays Shield Nickel, Repunched Date, 1867/1867, FS-301 (old 002.1).  Choice Almost Uncirculated, certified PCGS/CAC AU-58.
If you are viewing this listing, then you
    in all likelihood
certainly know what you are looking at. In a word: RARE.  A 100% original AU/Unc example of this important Shield Nickel variety, in the Condition Census.  Currently
, 3 in AU-58 at PCGS, with one higher in MS-62; the NGC Pop consists of 2 in MS-62.  Based upon how Shield Nickels are typically graded, those three MS-62's likely do not look much different, or much nicer, than the present example. I had held my breath that the Gods at PCGS might squeeze this into an Unc holder, but the current more strict (and I think, correct) grading regime figured otherwise.  Regardless, you will wait for quite a while to find a replacement, let alone at this grade level.  Most recently, one of the three PCGS AU-55's (CAC) brought ,120 at Heritage (April, 2019).  The only other Heritage auction records are for one of the two other AU-58's, which sold a number of years ago.  PCGS suggests a value for this variety of ,500 in AU-55, with none given for any other grade due to a lack of auction results.
As for the price shown, it can certainly be seen as a bit speculative, but seems within reason given the rarity and limited availability. However, I have also included a Make an Offer option. Please note that offers considerably lower than my asking price will be rejected out of hand.  I am not desperate to sell this coin by any means, and please remember that ebay takes a considerable chunk out of my hide to sell a coin here. I am also a former PCGS Shield Nickel Registry Set owner and more knowledgeable about the series than most dealers, certainly on ebay.  To than end, please be polite - you can always contact me to discuss the matter.
