    Description

    1868-Shield Nickel ^VG^:
The Shield Nickel was the first U.S. five-cent piece with the composition of copper-nickel, which is the same alloy of which U.S. nickels are minted today. The Shield Nickel was minted between 1866 and 1883, then was replaced by the Liberty Head Nickel, which is also referred to as the "V" nickel.
The shield device is very similar to the Two-Cent shield.
Both coin shields are beautiful pieces of artwork.
This 1868-Shield Nickel is a nice coin for your collection.
