Excellent Antique Handmade Hanging/ Corniche Shelf, Made of SouthwesternHard Pine,
Found in
New Mexico
, Original Paint, c. 1890
This wonderful Southwestern pine shelf is reminiscent of Early American shelves and of early New England pulpits. The three heavily crown- or bolection-molded facia were hand planed from a single thick plank of Ponderosa or other hard pine. To these, the top and bottom are attached with old round nails, which is how the approximate date (c. 1890) is estimated. Earlier shelves with this elaborate type of molding would be made with hand-forged or square nails. It retains a thin coat of original Spanish brown paint, uncovered after removal of old green and gray overpaint. This piece was found at an estate sale in Alamogordo, New Mexico and may have been made for a small chapel or household to hold religious statuary.
In excellent presentable condition, this shelf would look great in an adobe house and other Southwestern, as well as Early American, environments to display folk art objects.
Dimensions: 18-1/2" wide x 8-1/2" tall x 8-1/8" deep (at top). 4-1/2" deep at base.
Condition: Excellent. No structural damage, cracks, or replacements. Has two filled screw holes at back corners of top where hangers were once attached.
