The Packard Automotive Plant of Detroit, Michigan was 3.5 million square feet and was the first example of the use of reinforced concrete in the United States for industrial construction in the automotive industry. The Packard Plant was officially opened in 1903 and at the time was considered to be the most modern automotive manufacturing facility in the world. The Packard Plant closed in 1958, but other businesses operated out of it and used it for storage until the 1990s. Fun Fact - In the 90's the buildings were used to host "infamous" underground raves and techno parties, including the Spastik Party hosted by Richie Hawtin. Fun Fact 2 - During World War II, production of automobiles were halted in the plant and instead they were contracted to manufacture war materials. More specifically, they were tasked with manufacturing the Packard V-1650 Merlin Engine which was used to power the North American P-51 Mustang Fighter Plane.
