THIS LISTING IS FOR A CAST IRON MAJISTEC 1920'S Underground Garbage Receiver Huntington,
Indiana It is marked in the casting under the small lid THE MAJISTEC CO. HUNTINGON IND. NO.5-L 1924 and it is marked under the large lid NO. 5-R 1924. I would guess the 5 is for 5 gallons and the L is for lid and the R is for rim. I have found catalogue pages that the smallest can capacity they list is 8 gallons with a shell size of 15-3/4" x 21-1/4" the shell size of this one is 13"x15". The outside is about 18" tall x 15-1/2" at the widest point the small hole is about 8-3/4".
NEW OLD STOCK FROM 3RD FLOOR OUTSIDE STORAGE OF A 160-YEAR-OLD LUMBER CO. Brushed the dust off this rare gem the cast iron top shows some oxidation on part of it as dose the heavy steel bottom it has been setting under roof in a unheated warehouse for about 96 years. The removable steel pail is absent other than that its in excellent condition.
The only sales I could find for items from this time period are used tops so I am thinking this is truly a rare item both by size and condition.
Bearing a single word – “Majestic” – the hole’s cover conceals what was known as far back as the 1920s as an underground garbage receiver. Families in that time used the receivers to place food waste outside the home in a way that prevented it from becoming too smelly or being accessed by animals or insects. It has two lids with a foot pedal to raise the smaller first lid.
For its part, the Majestic Company which manufactured the receiver remains in operation today, although its offerings look a little different now. The Huntington, Indiana-based company now appears to focus on fireplace and gas stove products.

Easily Emptied
The Majestic Under- ground Garbage Receiver comes complete with galvanized garbage can. The top as shown in the illustration consists of aring, lid and foot lever. A light pressure on the lever lifts the lid.

Breakproof malleahle iron top and hinges. Non-rusting hinge pins prevent corrosion and binding of the lid. Copper bearing steel body, sixteen gauge, thoroughly painted inside and out. Galvanized inside can oftwenty-six gauge thickness ijas-'^ doubled locked seams. Each receis/if - packedin heavy corrugated carton which insur^?*^'**' delivery in first class condition. Top and body are guaranteed not to break or rust out within ten years.
