Late 19th Century French Henri II Style Carved Oak Planter; Excellent Condition
Antique Continental/French planter in the Henri II style. Originally probably built in to a conservatory wall, or a sunny bay window - there are angles on the rear corners that indicate a join to pieces of the same height and design. Heavy, dark walnut stained oak, with elaborately carved foliage on the drawer front and sides. The upper section has a carved, pierced geometric design on the front and sides. The top edge is a curved gadroon motif. Original tin liner, with handles on either side. The lower tier is a drawer. The top has a cylindrical projection in the center, probably for an additional, basket-style planter to sit in. It has been suggested that it was for a fountain, but there doesn't appear to be any way for piping to have been introduced into the piece. Dovetailed construction.
In excellent antique condition. The finish is clean and consistent. The drawer opens and closes without issue. The joints on the drawer are tight. There is a small bit of the gadrooned edge missing (please see photos), but very minor issues overall. Sits levelly and solidly.
Measurements:  27" wide, 17" deep and 14" tall. The tray/planter is appx. 25" wide and 12" deep.
