Superb Original 1950s Complete United States Post Office Wooden Façade Mailboxes
Pigeon Hole Mail Cubbies
Description
This is an amazing and unusual complete original interior United States Post Office façade dating to 1951. Originally located in an Upstate New York post office, the façade was moved to a flower shop in Latham, NY. It is there that the façade not only served as a charming decorative accent, but also continued its journey as a functioning Post Office for many years. Composed of solid oak, the two sided structure features the original frosted glass, with gold decal lettering. The numbered brass door mailbox cubbies each have a depiction of an eagle with US shield on its breast. Two lettered combination lock knobs grace each mailbox. A packet containing the combination codes for each box is included. The back panel is marked "Property of the Post Office Dept., MFD by Corbin Cab't Lock, New Britain, Conn, 1951".
Condition:
In overall very good condition. All of the glass panels are intact. The lettering on the frosted glass exhibits only minor wear. The drawers show old adhesive tape labels and general surface wear. The pulley system on the windows is a bit worn and one of the anchoring hooks for one pulley on each window is missing. There are stains, scratches, checks, dings, and losses to the finish on the flat work surfaces. The façade is currently disassembled for transport and will need to be rebuilt once it reaches its new home.
Dimensions:
It is 95" tall. The door side length is 106" long and the mailbox side is 132" long.
***PLEASE NOTE***
This disassembled façade is for pick up only. The buyer is responsible for making all shipping/pick up arrangements. We have estimated it to weigh about 1,500lbs, but it could be more or less. The panel holding all of the individual mailboxes will be most easily transported with the help of four movers.
Imagine the possibilities for this old post office. Whether in a coffee shop, tavern, or shop, this salvaged vintage façade will make a charming decorative focal point.
