NOTE: This is a black item so photos have been lightened so that you can see detail. Ebay thumbnails and picture hosting quality has really gone downhill, and all pictures have been displaying very dark and hard to see. If you need me to check something because you can't see it, please let me know.Offered for sale is this rare antique Victorian wall or floor grate, measuring right at 13" x 10" x 1" deep when folded in. It was salvaged from a downtown Victorian home. I am not sure if it is a floor or wall grate as they were used in the floor if there was no duct work, and then could be installed in the wall if ductwork was added later. Either way it's a really cool piece and there are no breaks in the cast iron. The design is an art nouveau floral vine and petaled bloom with the viney part being the top section, and the bloom, the lower section. The entire frame is a vine pattern, as well. There is lots of old paint on it and some dings, scratches, mostly on the thinner tin damper part. Leave it as is for a primitive shabby look...or strip it clean and repaint it with your color of choice.
It is unique from many I've seen that the cast iron grate portion actually is two pieces as I mentioned, and the lower part connects by means of a little bracket to the back damper. When pushed or pulled, it pushes into the floor or wall with the damper, and when pulled closed, it becomes flat again. Pretty cool feature......much better than an ordinary knob (and since there is no knob it is all flush whether it is closed or opened (which makes me think it was for the floor to let warm air from downstairs come through, and so you wouldn't trip or stub your toe on it). I hope that is clearer than mud.....it is hard to describe and show in the pictures since it blends in so well. If you look closely at the pics in zoom it might make more sense. There is a little bracket in the upper center of the middle bloom petal that allows this function.
This is heavy....almost 7 pounds. There is a couple of bolts and a curved piece by the bolt that figures into how it secures to the structure, but I'm not quite sure how it works. These bolts are approximately on a 12" center.
